These car companies obsess over having 10,000 chips in tbe cars when they aren’t needed. Give me a 20k car with power windows and AC and I’m good to go!
In '99 I needed a work truck, I settled on a '99 F250 7.3 and still own it. We both retired 2 years ago. I needed a set a tires recently, the service dude came up and asked me if the numbers on the odometer were real as he had never seen that before. It currently sits at 470,099 and yes, I've taken very good care of it all these years. Me get rid of this to buy something newer?...not a chance.
My '05 diesel station wagon has about 225K miles on it. I just had the injectors out and apart to clean them. I don't know exactly how far the car has gone because someone clocked it and took off around 100K about 13 years ago.
Damn! I thought I had a decent engine. Guy called me Friday to let me know when they pulled it out it was no good. $800.00 is a good price for a rebuild
There is also a poor-man's rebuild where you hone (polish) the cylinders walls, put in new piston rings (still using your old pistons) and grind the valves.
It’s my timing chains. This particular vehicle has 3 different timing chains. To fix the problem the engine has to be pulled completely out. It was going to cost me $800.00 for the engine (from another vehicle) and $500.00’for my guy to put it in. It’s been a real pain in the ass. I bought the car for my sister who is disabled and a recent (early 2019 pre-Covid kidney transplant). It’s her only way of transportation as she has many doctor appointments and a weekly ant-rejection infusion as she couldn’t tolerate one of the other heavy duty drugs so that means I’m transporting her wherever she needs to go. I’m having a heck of a time with this
I ordered a Ford Bronco with the Sasquatch package in 2021. I bought a Tacoma at the same time knowing it would hold the most value in the wait.
Got the Tacoma loan at 2.39%. Not Paying 10% for a loan.
The Bronco is scheduled to be built right after midterms. I will buy it if they are still selling at 15-20k over sticker price because I would sell it. I guess it depends on what happens at midterms.
Buy an old car and learn how to be a mechanic!
bingo
Except the price of gas makes me want a newer car because they are more efficient. An f150 with a 2.7 gets 20/26!
I used to drive a late 80's Tercel that got me high 30'smpg all day long.
I am looking at this
Cellulose to Bio-Oil looks promising (diesel replacement)
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/ie3024966
I think this will become competitive.
Fairly low tech. It would be cool if we can have grass-powered vehicles like the Amish.
That's more than my mortgage. I prefer older cars anyway. We have 6 cars and it's cheaper than other people's newer SUVs.

I don't have power windows and I'm good with that because I figure it's one less electronic thing that can break.

I guess people are going to have to look after the car they have rather than buy a new one.
I've always seen a new car as discretionary spending.
My 1999 Chevy 4WD pickup is in great shape and only has about 60,000 miles on it. I plan to hang on to it as long as I can keep it running.

I just keep fixing it because I'm very stubborn.
I do like pickups. I had one when I was young. It was very similar to an early 80s Ford Courier.
Mechanics and body shops are loving it.
Buy yourself a clunker to fix up while you can. The older the better.
(Obama's cash for clunkers ruined some of that)
Friend of mine rebuilds engines. He has more work than he can do.
Where’s your friend at? I need a rebuilt engine for a 2005 Ford Explorer
Sometimes crate engines are the way to go

Make sure all of the electronics are compatible --- even if it is the same year. Modern engines do stupid computer incompatibility shit.
I like much older stuff --- carburetors.
Diesel only

$800.00 looks like a short block price. Long blocks are usually in the thousands.
You have "long blocks" whole engine rebuild
and "short blocks" usually work to just the block itself (you take engine apart -- do most of the work)
In both cases you still have to pull the engine and reinstall it.
Not beginner mechanic work.
$800.00 is a damn good price for a long block.

Make sure the replacement engine is compatible with your vehicle"s computer.
Get your engine supplier to commit to that.
$800 junkyard engine (if it is good, check the mileage) sounds OK
$500 labor sounds like a bargain (I have personally done engine swaps many years ago) IMO pain in the ass.
The two most expensive things on a vehicle are usually the engine and the transmission.
I believe I’ve got a trustworthy guy working on finding me an engine and you’re right, it’s a big pain in the ass!

Might need it for the zombie apocalypse.
People will continue to lease.
You will own nothing and be happy...
jus get a trailblazer for 2500 baby!!!
