Great advice. I doubt the government would send out an email like this until things are finalized. Still. It's most likely a scam either way to garner votes and voter info. I wouldn't answer.
Hubby and I both got email and my Dad forwarded same link from his CPA. It directed to studentaid.gov directly where you can apply to kind of expedite any processing. I filled it out before the pause.
Even though it is "on hold" due to court, they are still rolling out the ability to apply for forgiveness. It should link you to a .gov webpage where you can fill out the form.
The "real" one will say no action needs to be taken and if you don't want it you have to opt out. They're deciding who gets it or not and there's no application for you to fill out.
Whether it will be considered taxable income is a state by state decision. The process will be automatic for some people, if they already have access to your irs file and income. It did state you could expedite the process by filling out the application even if you are eligible for automatic forgiveness. Now we wait on the courts though.

The email had that disclaimer on it. I haven't clicked on any links at all.

I haven't seen anything myself. I'm on the hook for 10k of my daughters college debt. I have mixed feelings on this one.
I have less than $14k, and it would be nice to be rid of, but I'm with you.
Here is the link to the webpage they want people to fill out: https://studentaid.gov/debt-relief/application
Thank you!!
My son got one. It’s not automatic they must apply. Hell, I have been paying taxes for almost 40 years. It’s not right but damn.
I filled it out. They're taxing me out the ass, might as well use some of my own fucking money on me for a change.
Hmmmm. That is tempting! Will they make us file it on our taxes like they did the virus "relief"? They screwed me over with that.
If they do, I just won't.
Any loans forgiven become "taxable income", so do be careful.
I figured that will be the case! I am not even going to mess with it.
