Putin was a communist, in my book communists do a great deal of imposing. I wonder how free Russians really are as well. We are simply “The Ugly American,” by pedowood standards.
Ofc lib owned west is bad. But that doesnt make Russia or China good. We can make deals with them if they dont attack us and we dont attack them. But still they wont be our friends.
I don't buy that about America "blocking the free creative development of other civilizations".
Examples; The entire Soviet Union had, from 1945 to 1989, a span of 44-years unimpeded by the West to have as much "free creative development" as they wanted.
Do you notice they didn't produce any fine automobiles... or even good automobiles during that time? I don't see many Soviet era automotive classics.
Notice they didn't produce reliable passenger planes.
Russia didn't produce anything good in electronics, computers, television or high quality home audio systems.
I could go on and on with examples... but suffice it to say they had over 40-years of uninterrupted "free and creative development" that didn't amount to much. I don't think WE'RE responsible for holding them back.
First satellite. First man in space. First space station. First submarine constructed from titanium. Best ejection seats in the world. First-rate rocket engines. Most reliable and durable battle rifle (AK-47). Excellent fighter airplanes. Maybe not the finest automobiles, but they function in Moscow winter (-42 F lowest, compare to Anchorage, AK at -34 F). Since 1977, they have armed their submarines with a 200-knot rocket-propelled torpedo. Out of the land that produced Dostoyevsky, it also produced Solzhenitsyn. Not to mention Prokofiev and Shastakovich. God is visibly respected in their society.
If you were serious in your comparison, you would pay attention to what they excel in doing, compared to us. Different strokes for different folks.
I was a cold warrior in the defense industry working strategic defense. They were (and are) tough customers. Don't be so foolish as to underestimate them. They were always my mental model of who to emulate to find an engineering solution.
I think you are being a bit unkind. Russia did start from a severe low after WW2. After all, they lost more people than everyone else put together. That is partly why they are paranoid about NATO. They have held off Napoleon and Hitler, will they be successful a third time.
As for achievements, they did make bigger rockets than anyone else for a while. They led in the space race until the US said it put a man on the moon. They have also made and tested the biggest bomb ever. AK-47s are world-renowned. Largest, Typhoon class submarines. T54/55 most produced tanks. Vladimir P. Demikhov is worth a look.
I feel there may be lots of Russian advances that have been shielded from us.
He’s not wrong.

“Equality “ for these elites means everyone is poor and powerless.
In Russia you go to jail for 8 years if you call the war in Ukraine a "war"... very free thinking.

Actually the USSR did create one world-changing thing: Tetris
One of greatest videogames ever that continues to stand the test of time
