This is a very big deal. My neighbor and I run a dual farm beef co op. We use three JD tractors. We recently had the back hoe stop running. It took us a month, and 400 dollars worth of diagnostic tools to replace and reset all the potentiometers and get them in spec. It still wouldn't run. We finally gave up, and hauled it 75 miles to the nearest JD dealer. It took them ten minutes to hook it up to their computer, and reset the system to get it running. That is where they have been screwing farmers over big time. We actually correctly repaired the machine, but it would never run until they said the magic word, at a tune of $500. A very big deal indeed.
That kind of crap has to stop. If they have a magic box that "fixes" the tractor they should be forced to at least sell that to the customer. It proves they build in these "breaks" for revenue streams. It's like OBDII scanners for cars...
It's a no-win situation. Farmers want their diesel tractors to maximize fuel consumption, without regard to temperature, humidity, altitude, engine rpm or work load. This is going to require sensors and computers.
There SHOULD BE an OBDII type scanner, that tractors would use, that's standardized across brands, makes and models - so driving to a dealership with this tool isn't required.
But, given the population of tractors (compared to cars/trucks) - I honestly don't see this happening. Hell, I think most farmers would be happy with a RESET button that sets the tractor back to factory settings, and makes the computer re-optimize the system from scratch.
Plus you had to haul it so far, that's not cheep.
That was a huge expense for the farmers. God bless the farmers who make food.
So what does the new paradigm mean now? They have to provide diagnostic tools for free and let you have some control over software?
No, it means that companies can no longer be gatekeepers regarding fixing equipment someone owns. I unfortunately doubt it will later extend to computer software/operating systems.
Big win for the farmers.
Agreed, and I believe it has implications across the board. No company that sells you a good will have the ability to say that only they (certainly not you) can repair it.
Had a friend who routinely drove his Lamborghini, for daily use. Had to take it in to the dealer every 5,000 miles for oil change and tune up. After 1 year and 15,000 miles the manager of the Dealership talked to him.
"You are devaluing the name of Lamborghini by driving it so much".
The man sold his Lamborghini to that Rancho Mirage dealership, on the spot. That comment infuriated him. Why have a car, only to keep it in a garage?
He bought a Nissan NSX, and drives that daily - and it's as fast, if not faster, than his Lamborghini. That's now his daily commuting car. All I can say is "it must be nice".
A blind pig finds an acorn every now and then.
I invest, often have lost; but my thoughts were "I don't know who is going to win the new EV car market, Tesla looks good, but Toyota is massive, as is VW, GM and the others. ..... but everyone needs Lithium."
So, I got involved with ABML (American Battery Metals, which is changing their name to American Battery Technology Company). Over 2 dozen ex-Tesla engineers and Chemists, who have a NON-THERMAL (ie. no heat required) method of extracting Lithium, Cobalt and Nickel from scrap lithium batteries, as well as Clay. Do your own due diligence. They made my retirement dreams come true, and they are just getting started. But, seriously, do your due diligence. Never trust anyone.
When did the commies take over JD? Missed that.
They have taken over pretty much everything.
Not commies. Just greedy corporations. They will be the death of our nation, unless we reign them in, or abolish them completely.
Greedy (((people)))
Between 2004 and 2008, much of JD's embedded systems designes "may" have been stolen and "may" have been returned in the form of BM as controlling stakes in various parts of JD. Of course this is "may have been," and hear say.
You will own nothing, and be happy... takes a blow
Louis Rossmann did great work advancing right to repair regarding Apple computers. He should absolutely be given some credit regarding this.
Farmers need to not buy that green garbage. IH and New Holland are much better machines.
Great news!
Now do Kubota.
Majorly anti-capitalist a company shouldnt be forced to supply parts to third parties. Fucking government intervention!!
I don't know, it's so frustrating to have to turn to other English-speaking countries' news feeds to find out what's happening here at home. I hate it!
And also, thank you for letting us know. So sick of the "nothing's happening" "two more weeks" parrots. If I want to listen to a birdbrain, I'll talk to my libtard neighbor
Bedrock Point
Personal integrity is gone.
Horrible people set this in motion.
Rule #1, don't alienate your customers.
Buy old and maintain forever.
Much better than making huge payments.
That's good outcome and about time too!
I was getting on an airplane this morning and they had CNN on in the terminal and it was all about this story. It's being talked about and it's great news. I think the reason you didn't see it on US was because it was still 2am when you posted this.
Maybe the real question is where are you?
I am in Washington State. The Brits π¬π§ broke the story 6pm Pacific . πΊπΈ 12 hours later. CNN = Communist News Network .I understand there is no control of what you see in an airport terminal monitor just sayin π
Ahh, yeah, it's everywhere now. I know it's a big fight in England over the right to repair. I've been fighting with John Deere for a year over a tractor they locked down on my farm because I changed a spark plug myself.
They lockout the diagnostic program through the computer with their own software. Add on all the fancy sensors, screens, gauges and switches, you have quite the sophisticated piece of machinery.
They hate farmers they just want to enslave them with payments and maintenance/repairs
