I wouldn't say the sky is falling, but it won't be long before this tech is ubiquitous, tech being what it is. And since it can be used for good, like checking on the elderly (I've fallen and my router is telling you I can't get up), there will be plenty of reasons for pushing the technology.
Scientists from Carnegie Mellon University have shown that an off-the-self Wi-Fi router can not only tell where you are in a room, but it can also determine your body position.
The team didn’t have to spend big to get the hardware for this experiment. All they needed was a pair of entry-level routers that cost about $30 apiece. The routers were set up at opposite ends of a room, and a computer measured 2.4GHz signal transmission between the access points.
They'll be bored to death spying on us. My dementia riddled husband who watches MAS*H all day, my chihuahua Steve and his ever fascinating body-licking, cookie-thieving and revenge-pooping ritual, and me, the "mastermind", washing dishes and folding laundry.
LOL
Almost as exciting as us. Even our pets are bored with us.
This hack won't be used on a day to day basis.
Your Apple watch and 5G phone will do it much better.
Your smart phone, your Google Hive, your Alexa speaker and your voice activated TV will listen on you.
Far more concerned with all the other tech they’ve jacked into people homes. Tablets and phones everywhere, TVs, Fridges! And other tech items always “capable” of watching/listening. Don’t get me wrong the tech exists, doesn’t mean it’s actually doing anything…the storage of such data would be beyond any capacity that’s available…even the repository in Colorado or Utah, don’t remember where. To record all available data would be mind blowing and I just don’t believe physically they could pull it off, the demand for storage would be astronomical. My two cents…
I just think of it a suite of tools that are (or will be) used to keep an eye on the people. All for our good.
Indeed.
Pity we don't have the same surveillance on those in power for their own good.
So do I need two routers in the same room? Who does that?
That was just a feasibility study. All you need is a router for a receiver, and another source of frequencies (or more technically, a radiation source) that the router can receive i.e. cellphones, laptops, iPads, wireless printers, ROKU TV, a neighbors router, etc.
Ahhh, I see. Interesting.
Beam-forming WiFi tech currently found in some routers could in theory be capable of doing this, and perhaps with only one router. That tech was literally developed from military sonar technology.
good and bad. who is the person uses it, what has that person been taught as a child? what values does that person have. goes back in end to parents and teachers.
Technically speaking. Anything that emits any sort of waves electrical or otherwise. Could at least in theory be used to spy on someone’s physical location
The caveat is. Some waves are inherently more useful for the purpose then other ones.
That and there’s faster, safer and cheaper alternatives then solely relying measuring waves.
