there are many more omissions than those. fasting is very important, however they failed to connect the context well. In the scriptures referenced the seminal topic was that of BELIEF. Prayer and Fasting impacts Belief and thus Un-Belief. Prayer is an act of worship and relationship between you and God. Fasting is pushing the flesh down because there is an inverse relationship between flesh and spirit (romans 8). The relationship is that of opposites, they work against each other. Fasting to quench the flesh while enhancing the spirit - WHILE YOU PRAY during your fast. Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. As a result of your relationship with God, and walk in the Spirit your faith and belief are strongly impacted so when you pray over things (demons, sickness, disease etc...) mountains literally move. I often see amazing manifestations of Holy Spirit, miracles of healing and expulsion of demonic oppressors. God expects us to be doing these things and witness his success as we practice obedience. Mark 16:17-20 (notice the word Believe in verse 17)
Thank you for bringing this topic up. Years ago I used to fast periodically and think I'll work on getting back into doing so. This discussion, from a biblical perspective, certainly showcases the most important reason to fast - and what the focus should be while doing so.
There are lots of differences between translations based on Textus Receptus and similar manuscripts [eg KJV, NKJV etc] , and those based on Nestle-Arland/Bible Societies [NIV and most translations published by Zondervan]
What we have is the issue of transmission of the Greek manuscripts for New Testament. In the old Testament there are differences between the Masoretic Text and the Septuagint/LXX
Let me declare my preference for the Textus Receptus NKJV - on this particular verse my question has always been that how does one know to fast in case one comes across such a demonic? You cannot fast 100% of the time because you would soon die.
Equally in Matthew 9:14 Jesus is asked - by John's disciples - why His disciples don't fast His response is they don't because the bridegroom is with them but they will. So if when Jesus' disciples were trying to cast out this demonic they are in this period of being with the bridegroom and they are not fasting then they would not have been able to cast it out, so why the rebuke?
Finally Jesus is clear - ONLY this type of demonic is cast out with Prayer and Fasting - it is not a general statement and to suggest it is is not good exegesis.
Matthew 17:21 is completely missing from my ESV. I even asked my preacher brother for his recommendation on which Bible I should purchase. This is what I feared would happen, thus I asked for him to tell me which Bible would be the "best". I do like the ESV, but now I'm wondering what else has been left out? I guess I can go and dust off one of my pre1960 KJV and begin reading that, but the phrasing is so 'antiquated'. Heck, if for no other reason, fasting will help the waistline. :) Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the ESV with commentary, but it bugs me that a way to defeat the Devil is missing from my Bible. Prayer and Fasting is a powerful combination against Satan. That should be the takeaway from this entire situation. (I wonder how God dealt with the scholars who took verse 21 out of the Bible?)
I switched to KJV years ago after researching all this info and I just couldn't believe the things that were changed or omitted. I sometimes get crap from people for using it (at church 🙄) but I just laugh at them and tell them it's written in English- the language we SPEAK and if they can't get a dictionary and look up the words they don't know then that's kinda sad.

Fasting and prayer seems to be a Native American custom as well if Yellowstone can be believed.
I am not Catholic. So I checked my NIV and they are absolutely right.

Who would do such a thing?
