Stocking up on supplies for when the s**t hits the fan, how many months of food ? Anyone have on opinion about this? I thought about 6 months, well that's how much I think I almost have. Clueless
It's getting warm soo start seeds
We have 4 adults in my home, two are disabled, so the meal preps are different, I have cases of nutritional supplements drinks and dehydrated potatos and cans of hearty soups, for the two of us who are not and can eat anything, I plan on one "main" meal a day, I have a combination of MRE's, Mountain House, Augasson Farms dehydrated meals, cans of spam, tamales, hash, soups, veggies, pilot crackers, brown bread, about 2 months worth of dried rice and beans, many pounds of nuts and seeds and dehydrated fruit, flours. Two months of meat in the freezer, turkeys, lamb and stew meats. Also first aid supplies, bleach, peroxide, 90% alcohol, wraps, bandages, etc. As much as it looks like a lot, I think I only have about 2 months worth of full meals, and 3 months of stored potatos, butternut squash, onions and garlic. I need a lot less calories than my 25 year old son does. It's good to keep track and break it down calorie wise as to what you would need a day. I am obsessive about it and buy about 300 dollars of stored food a month, and keep doing it. My goal of course would be for a year, and I am nowhere near that right now. My concern is more economic, so if money was scarce, I would not have to spend it all at once on foods.
The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints used to recommend that everyone have 7 years of food put by.
I think they now recommend 3 months. You might want to fact check that, though.
They have some excellent tips on how to stockpile food inexpensively. Remember to rotate your foods and eat the oldest stuff first.
I grew up in a family that kept a year supply of food and other items. That's just what worked the best for us. We preserved our own gardens and that really helped with costs.
Don't forget toiletries as well. I hit up CVS when the planets align and their sales correspond to high value coupons from manufacturers and store coupons and I can buy toiletries and such for 10 cents each. I clean them out on those days. Double stacking coupons there has saved me tons of money over the years.
I've noticed that many people haven't started food storage because it is so expensive, especially now. I've found some really good sites that teach you how to do it cheap(er). Hope this helps. :

Several people I know who have been starting their stockpile from scratch have found this article helpful.

It's geared more towards people who are slowly building their stockpile, but lots of good advice, IMO.
Thanks It will come in handy.
That’s very helpful, thanks.
My pleasure. This is one of my very favorite topics and I could happily discuss it for hours. 🙂
Personally, I am guessing that the precipice wont last that long. Most people wont survive. Probably a few weeks at most. If you can stock up for 6 months, it should be pretty safe.
I don’t have a clue. Between my family, two houses we have a couple jenni’s, a few freezers of deer and veggies, on a list to split a cow and if needed we have plenty of woods with wildlife. From the looks of my local stores people are either stocking up or government is holding out on us. Probably the government.
I would recommend a generator and a large smoker. Or build an 8x8 wood shed smoker. That way if the power goes out you can smoke your meat after it thaws. You can start smoking it now & then put it in the freezer.
