Yea it's called the electric carriage if you need a way to look that stuff up. Also I do believe NYC had a fleet of electric taxis at the time as well. The major limit as is today is the battery technology. Rumor has it depending on how deep down the rabbit hole you research, that a guy invented an electric carriage that could get you around 1000 miles. The jumping off point for electric vehicles coincides with standard oil.
You don't know whether he had any further inventions beyond imaginary ones. There was no evidence, physical or documentary, among his effects to describe any of them. He was well into his 70s and was living the kind of life that today we could have associated with dementia: solitary, indifferent to his own physical well-being, and getting all his social interaction by feeding pigeons.
Hard to imagine his inventions would be "misused," when a good many of them were not used at all.
No reason to think they found anything useful, or kept them. Professor Trump had a low estimate of their technical significance. They would have been part of Tesla's estate, remanded to his only living relatives in Serbia. After all, who else would have a right to them?
Talking of Standard Oil (i.e. Rockefeller) and electric cars, I heard that Rockefeller lobbied the government to ensure that electric cars had to pass an extra test to show that they were safe because everyone knows that electricity is dangerous.
That inflated the price of all electric cars so the gasoline-powered cars were cheaper for the same spec. Rockefeller was already as rich as some countries based on his sales of oil for heating and lighting but he wanted his products to be used in cars as well.
And if you don't know that electricity is dangerous, you ought to know. It killed a laboratory colleague of mine in a university laboratory, and he knew better than most of its dangers. Please don't scoff at truth.
Apologies. Unless the irony or sarcasm is unmistakable, my policy is to take everyone literally at their word. Still, you must be aware of the occasional folly and ignorance in the public, surrounding the subject of electricity, even after a century of living with it. (I speaketh as one who has run afoul of horsewire more than once!)
Yes, ultimately, money and power. Tesla offered a world where free energy existed along with many other technological advancements....a truly remarkable man who i dont think gets the credit or respect he deserves.
This was at a time of industrial revolution where you had massive wealth and power being held by titans of industry. Titans whose fortunes depended on Tesla going bye bye. If you control the energy, you control the power literally and figuratively speaking. Tesla and what he was capable of rocked the boat wayyyyyy too much. He had to go and so, he went. Energy dependence was crucial to maintaining and amassing power to then exert that power and exploit it in every way possible to further your own agendas and wealth. Rockefeller and his boys had too much skin in that game to let the cash cow dry up.
This same thing happened all over various industries. It's the same principle reason why industrial hemp was outlawed. Cultivation and manufacture of hemp for paper, wood, and the other 840 products you can make with it would have absolutely crushed the paper and timber industries plus others via association. Only in this case instead of murdering a pioneer they successfully lobbied congress to pass legislation requiring a marijuana tax stamp. Which subsequently they would not issue said tax stamp effectively destroying the largest threat to the US paper and timber industries.
Seems like more often than not power and wealth have always been the motivating factors in suppressing human progression and advancement.
Sheer nonsense and an urban myth. He was never silenced. Who could do it? He was endlessly promoting himself and his ideas. But as he grew older, the proportion of visionary speculation outstripped his practical accomplishment, and he was often talking about grand possibilities that no one understood how to accomplish, promising revelations that never materialized. Wireless power was never demonstrated. If you speak visions, but no ear can decipher your language---are you "silenced"? His final years were self-isolated and in penury, kept afloat by a stipend from his old partner, George Westinghouse. World War II was in full swing. There were other concerns to listen to.
The FBI was aware that Tesla's only heirs were in Serbia and doubtless motivated their action of sequestering Tesla's papers for assessment as to whether they might represent a threat in foreign hands. They enlisted Dr. John G. Trump to assess Tesla's material, which he found to be harmless and unremarkable. In 1952, on pressure from Tesla's nephew, Tesla's estate (in 80 trunks) was sent to Serbia in 1957. The idea that the FBI is holding his files of miraculous inventions is unsupported. There is no secret Tesla technology.
Fuel and Electricity seems to be the biggest cows to milk, the 2 industries they're willing to murder, because I've heard of many who found new ways of obtaining free energy to run vehicles, and they've all died in weird circumstances. There is no need for batteries to run an electric cars, there are other technology like hydrogen, water, and such..look it up.
Hydrogen is a fuel. Water is the result of hydrogen combustion, not a source of energy. You might look that up.
But if you are thinking of using fuel cells (hydrogen-air electrochemical reaction), then it could make sense. You still have similar problems arriving at lightweight, efficient fuel cells. And creation of a hydrogen production and distribution infrastructure. In the end, hydrocarbon fuels and internal combustion engines are still the most practical and economic approach.
And because electric cars had such shortcomings compared to gas cars, they were quickly rendered obsolete for practical use. Their batteries lasted a long time (more durable electrochemistry), but did not contain nearly the same energy as a lithium battery of today.

Tesla didn’t need a battery. He said you could design appliances or cars to absorb electric ions throw the air.
And never demonstrated or documented how that might be done. He was prone to do that as he got older.
Because he knew his inventions were going to be misused. I would have done the same thing.

So you’re saying the US Army and Potus uncle John Trump took all teslas nots and didn’t use many of them?
No reason to think they found anything useful, or kept them. Professor Trump had a low estimate of their technical significance. They would have been part of Tesla's estate, remanded to his only living relatives in Serbia. After all, who else would have a right to them?
As if the US government cares about anyones rights. And if they were of significance would that have been announced? Playing devils advocate here.

Sorry, I meant it with an element of sarcasm.
As a side note, I am a qualified but retired electrical engineer in the UK.
Apologies. Unless the irony or sarcasm is unmistakable, my policy is to take everyone literally at their word. No problem. I know that sarcasm seldom comes across well in this medium. Note to self: Must try harder!
Cheerio! There are those who try harder---and those who hardly try.
Why was he silenced? Money?
Because they couldn't "meter" the power his tech generated.

More money in gas. In fact, Tesla had discovered FREE energy for the world.
