My awakening started about 10 years ago. Long story short, I'm now at the point where I am questioning why I've ever paid income taxes.
I left the corporate world in 2019 and I have my own business as does my spouse. We don't have any employees. Last year we got some crazy notice from the IRS saying we made a mistake and owe them $2800 more dollars. A few friends also got some letters like this. I wrote back and they sent me back a letter saying THEY made a mistake, but we still owe the $2800 and now we owe interest on it?!? I am not joking when the letters they send make NO sense and seem like a bunch of jargon and words smashed together to sound official.
Are the rumors true? Are we NOT required to pay income taxes as citizens? Over 15% of my earnings already go to taxes (property tax and everything else we pay day to day). My spouse and I canceled our health insurance over a year ago because we couldn't afford that AND income taxes. I thought we'd have extra money, but we do not with the rising cost of food and gas and well, you know.
If I don't pay will we go to jail? I've never heard of anyone except celebrities having to do this. I am happy to pay taxes that pay for actual healthcare, children, roads, etc. I have no desire to fund weapons or war. I will fund peace no problem. I donate to causes I believe in when I can.
This may be just a rant, but I am pretty much DONE doing things that don't make any sense. I feel like if enough of us refused to pay taxes on our income it could accelerate breaking out of this matrix. However, it does feel like being stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Almost 7 years ago, I caught California's income tax agency running an embezzlement and racketeering scheme. I have been trying to get it stopped since then. In my efforts to stop it, I have uncovered 7 more schemes to overcharge taxpayers. I have always paid my taxes and prior to catching the scheme, never doubted that income taxes are legit: https://gwsandiego.net/blog/?p=611
Because I have been fighting corruption at an income tax agency, a lot of people have contacted me about their problems with the IRS (which I know nothing about). I am hearing a lot of stories like yours where the IRS is claiming people owe money when they really don't. It seems like the government is desperate to collect funds so they are just sending out collection notices to everyone.
A lot of people have also sent me info about the income tax being illegal. I am now convinced they are illegal. Since they don't have the rule of law on their side, they force compliance with a big stick. You are right that if we all stop paying our taxes that they can't go after us all, but it will likely be tough to find a big enough group to push back. Some of the group will surely be sacrificial lambs for the rest, and no one wants to roll the dice that they'll be the lamb.
In my case, CA was demanding that I send extra money that the agency knew -- by their own records -- was not owed. They'd embezzled my money and wanted me to send them more. The beat down was so hard that I sent tens of thousands of dollars more than I should have just to get them to leave me alone... and then they embezzled that money and beat me down for even more money...
I will not ever stop fighting to stop the corruption of the extra taxes being charged above the properly assessed amount, but I also am not willing to battle the issue of whether or not the properly assessed amount is legal.
Here is a series of short videos on the topic by a legal scholar who has won against IRS. Federal income tax is absolutely illegal, but the system has been rigged to screw over constituents: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAkSTXk9sO0FE0cpDo3vWp_MvYV_tYkJO

Here is another GW post on the topic: "Listen carefully to what this former IRS Agent says here. The only way she's wrong about section (A) 'most people'--is if every corporations and every business in America is somehow secretly owned by DC, making every employee in every job, a US employee... so...is there any evidence of this? Your second link about the "complete story" says VIDEO UNAVAILABLE. Maybe there is another URL that leads to it?
I am about to walk out the door (running late because of posting here! Argh!), but I'll look for it this evening.
See if you can find some constitutional experts on line who discuss this. (Just make sure they're legit.) The constitution does address the matter of taxes, many of which were supposed to be in the form of tariffs from other countries. "Our" (the people's) wealth and income was not supposed to be taxed. But yeah, if you're stuck in a corrupt system, sure you'll go to jail. Unless you have someone who really knows what they're talking about to represent you.
I just posted several videos about the topic, two from former IRS agents and one from a lawyer who has won against the IRS, but said the backlash was so vicious that he regrets going after them. The IRS is vicious.
Thank you. And I believe you.
can you link the videos here for further reference?
They are linked in the thread.
KS passed the Kansas Second Amendment Protection Act (SAPA). Challenge made it all the way to the supreme court (which did not hear). SAPA says if the stuff is never in INTRA State commerce, is is not subject to INTRA State commerce TAXATION.
US Dicktrick Courts disagreed. Case No. 6:15-cr-10150-JTM
I also left corporate for self employment a few years ago and was surprised at how much less I paid/owed due to all the write offs allowed. Granted I also didn't earn as much, but the lighter tax load has been helpful.
I have also started digging in to the history of Fed income tax and as other has eluded to, it was never really written/passed into law. Still, that makes no difference with the power they have to fuck your life up severely if you don't pony up. It sucks because there's no due process, no accountability and the complex tax code only garners them more money at our ignorance of their convoluted system. The other downside is that middle class can't afford tax attorneys who know how to fight back. The Fed "banks" on that fact (literally and figuratively). Don't even get me started on the double tax on things like tax refunds, inheritance etc.
I'm not against taxes, but the Fed Income tax need to fucking die, PFQ. 150 plus million Americans resisting (not refusing) for a year or two would wake a lot of tyrants up.
Edit: A government that is fearful of it's citizens is true self rule and true freedom. Citizen's that are fearful of their government is tyranny and true slavery.
Amen. In my case, my estimated tax payments were embezzled. The CA income tax agency said that since they "couldn't locate" my payments I needed to pay them more money to cover the tax liability. They filed a wage garnishment. I never had the opportunity to go before a judge to prove the liability had already been paid prior to the garnishment. I did eventually sue them in tax court, and then appealed in superior court, but I had to represent myself because I couldn't afford a lawyer. It's like $100,000 + in legal fees to go to court.
I am so sorry you had to go through that. Makes me so angry to hear these experiences. Goes to my point that they don’t do this to the wealthy because they know they can afford to battle the system. The time has long past needing for Americans to stand up in mass against this crap. I only wish I knew how to get the ball rolling. People like us are too busy trying to work and save and meagerly get by, or if lucky, get ahead. BTW, I never pay estimated quarterlies. I just pay the little penalty. I’ve usually made more off the mutual fund interest during the year to make it worthwhile, even w/ the cap gain tax.
Here is some helpful sauce from first hand experience:
For corporate taxes that IRS is saying you owe:
A. Make sure to use certified mail to send in all payments/filings
B. If they say you owe more, send certified letter back asking about when they received your filings, etc. Just tell them the dates of your postmarks, but do not show copies; And request 1. Maximum reduction due to hardship and 2. Payment plan of maximum length.
C. If they do not reduce amount owed or provide dates of their receipt of your filings, they will likely outsource collection to a private collection agency.
D. As soon as you get collection letter, dispute it in writing via certified letter and show copies of postmarks that you filed on time.
E. If collection agency does not go away, tell them you will settle for 10% of what is claimed; OR you want the amount reduced and a payment plan over 2-3 years.
For personal taxes that IRS is saying you owe:
A. Respond by deadline with certified letter asking them for clarification of the reason for taxes owed and detailed calculation of how they arrived at that number.
B. When you receive their response, break down every aspect of it, and respond with second certified letter pointing out calculation, and/or assumption errors.
C. If they insist, send third certified letter and ask for a "payment plan equivalent in length to Hedge Fund payment plans that owe business taxes to the IRS." (this happens to be 100 years).
You might not go to jail but you'll likely be penalized, good luck.
If Everyone stopped paying at the same time it would be great.

I do want to note that the majority of people who have contacted me about their tax problems, both with CA and with the IRS, have said that all seems to be fine at the time they filed their returns, then the agency comes after you 2 - 3 years after the fact.
