Just recently in a family gathering the topic went to EVs. One of them has ordered a Tesla and is eagerly waiting for it. They were talking about how amazing and environmentally friendly they are and how every car will be an EV very soon, and how they should all be buying Tesla shares (I was laughing quietly because I had bought Tsla before its first split, and these same folks bought bitcoin when it was 60k).
Anyway I just gently mentioned to them how it might not exactly work that way, and how Europe is at the vanguard of what happens when you try and switch away from gas and they were having none of that. They all actually believed that almost all electricity in Australia created from solar panels.Pointed them to the fact that in Australia only 10% electricity is from solar. But none of it mattered. EVs are the best and its all green. They have to experience it all to understand, no one can teach them.
The "eureka" moment will come when they have to replace the battery in the electric car down the road.
I can't remember the last time I have to pay $10k+ to fix my gasoline car. In fact, I don't think the sum total of all of my car repair bills exceeded $10k.
Meanwhile, replacing the Tesla battery will easily set someone back $20k. Maybe even more...
$30 K.
Just sell the car before that happens
Idgi?
Why would you replace your batteries in a 20 year old car?
It’s as stupid as changing the engine in a petrol/diesel car, as long as it’s not a classic.
Modern battery packs will outlive the car they’re part of.
It’s a myth that you’ll need to replace the batteries on a modern EV. A myth based on the tech from the early 2000s, especially in EVs with a battery pack of less than 40 kWh.
how often do u need to replace the battery?
There's also the little bonus tidbit of the fact that those batteries like to catch fire. And with most Fire Departments not having adequate training with electric vehicle fires, they end up using obscene amounts of water to fight the fire. 6-12,000 gallons of water to fight those batteries. Doesn't sound very green to me.
On top of all the other problems.
Standard response: "None of my friends' cars caught fire"
"None of my friends' cars caught fire"
What a sad way to view the world.
I never caught COVID, therefore, it doesn't exist.
Covid doesn't exist. The jabs are the poison.
