Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Yes, new users get their posts filtered until the build up some karma by commenting. You can always tag a mod if you think your post is high quality. I did manually approve your latest post since it does look interesting.
On that note, perhaps it might be useful to have a "Newbie" flair or "Newcomer" flair for those who are handshakes and/or have not accumulated much Karma.
This would highlight such pedes to the board, particularly those watching the NEW section, such that we could observe, and encourage with specific updoodles if warranted, or (erg) ignore and perhaps downvote if the quality is sub-par.
Without such a flag/flair, with only a handshake (which I think appears in the comments, but not on posts?) one doesn't really know any user from a bar of soap unless one checks out their profile.
The idea here is to have some mechanism by which we can give good encouragement to upcomings, to newcomers who want to contribute, if and when it is warranted. Sometimes it's hard to get traction when the board is so busy, when slides are going on (ashland, I'm talking to you! But I mean that in a positive way, not a negative one), or when your posts aren't noticed.
Sometimes a little encouragement provided in the right time and the right way could really boost potential contributors, and help newcomers feel appreciated or welcomed (if warranted, of course), inspiring them to become more active.
u/catsfive ? mods?
Or am I off the reservation with this one?
Valet? Where is my car?
Ashland delivers a lot of quality stuff. And, he's been hounding hounds in order to deliver said stuff to the board.
Top kudos for the effort, u/ashlanddog
Nonetheless, when a stream of 10+ posts hits New, it can tend to slide things. As one who tends to post at that exact time period (?), I notice this sort of thing.
Whatcha gonna do? Dogs will be dogs.
Updoodle for "updoodles."
This is the way.
I don't think this is a bad idea, but would be a nightmare to implement.
eh? Just add a flair that says "newcomer" or such. Can be added by the one doing the post, etc.
I didn't mean an automated flair. Yeah, that sounds like it would be gnarly.
But maybe it's just pie-in-the-sky thinking. 'sok. Nothing lost.
then every shill will add the flair
I've been a user for 2 years and have had my posts show in new before... Unfortunately now the post is 5 hours old and still doesn't show in New for me and will probably gain little traction. It's a shame because I felt it should be explored more by the users here.
What was it about?
Note to Tyler: 'karma' (points) are not accrued by time of account held, but by contributions being upvoted by fellow pedes.
Thanks
