Maybe, but I see it as a sign of alienation. They don't know what they are, but they know they don't belong with other people, so they pick the pronoun of a distant figure.
I see it as they're scared to go full "she" or "he" whichever the opposite to their biological gender is so they pick a "safe" middle ground pronoun of "they/them" which still allows them to feel special and be difficult and draw attention to themselves whenever someone "misgenders" them or something
