They definitely are, both directly and indirectly. One of the first non-mainstream stories I heard out of Ukraine after the Russians got involved was a Spetsnaz team breaking up a child smuggling ring. The kids they rescued were from all over; Ukraine, Russia, Europe, America...
Years ago my wife and I were looking to adopt and actually looked at Russia and Ukraine. Before we went through the process we ended up adopting a baby from one of our old foster kid's sister (we had our own twins but lost one in pregnancy so we also did foster care for many years).
About 10 years later we saw Russia turn off their international adoption factory - they gave a few reasons about a case of verbal abuse and one idiot American family sending a kid back but the reasons didn't seem strong to me.
Fast forward to stuff like this article happening today and it looks like Putin has been saving the children for far longer than I thought. He stopped the international trafficking in Russian kids. Now he's doing Ukraine.
My cousin has two adopted Russian daughters. She got them both as infants and neither knows any other family. One is still in HS the other just finished her second year at Michigan. Based family, based young woman, no worries about her being indoctrinated at liberal UM.
So Russians are actually saving the kids!
