The socialization argument has always angered me. Our pediatrician asked me for the third time in a row about whether our kids were "getting some socialization" and I finally told him, "Look, homeschoolers snicker silently when you ask that question. Did you know I'm in a homeschool community with your niece and her six kids?" He never asked me again.
Mmm agreed to disagree. Just because you are doing it right doesn’t mean that most of them are. I personally have many homeschooled kids in my extended family that are proof of the opposite.
Trails of America, sports teams, martial arts classes, enrichment classes, music/band/chorus, church, volunteer work, accompanying parents in their business and errands, and organized/semi organized home school family get-togethers for classes, projects, park days, swim meets, museum visits, etc.
Our kids are polite, well spoken, informed and complimented by observant adults everywhere we go. Other parents wish their kids were like ours but don't see the connection. The museum and library personnel do, though. They know we leave our areas cleaner and we're more polite and gracious, and that both kids and adults will be engaged and interested.
We decided to do Biblioplan instead of a full package curriculum this time, and I have to say everyone was engaged in book shopping, music and movie list making, and organizing in general that it could have been its own unit study. The more we do this, the more the kids notice the differences between their happiness levels and learning versus their government institutionalized counterparts, without us saying or doing a thing.
At a museum a little while ago, docent was asking general questions of the mixed group of families, and do I even have to tell you whose hands were raised to answer almost all of them? The faces of the other families were incredulous to say the least. The docent asked where they got to school and both hs families identified themselves. Afterwards, one lady asked us about it, suggesting we were lucky to have such genius kids; I told her I don't think they're geniuses, but that it's amazing how much everybody in the family can learn when we're actually focused on learning, and did she know that fourth graders only need about 2 hours of book learning/day? The rest is day care and programming to the lowest common denominator. I don't know if she's going to do it, but maybe if we make public showings more often, we can speak whatever that selfish social pride factor they have for Instagram crap and turn it toward something good.
Biblio is from Latin for book, but Biblioplan impressed me as it is very neutral but complete, has memory Bible verses every week, and matches for other spines, even Catholic. And yes, one of the best things about home school is that anything cool can become a unit study. We've collectively dived into some really fun things as opportunities have presented themselves, and it empowers the kids to take charge of their learning experience too, just the opposite of government institutions...

Back in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s you didn’t hear much about homeschooling. I wish I had a do over, I would not send my children to private schools either.

But maybe you can help current homeschoolers by working with a co-op or microschools... Our even consider starting one!
