I don't know guns but surely wearing it there just invites nutters to grab it?
Not really, that specific style of holster requires a very specific type of grip. you have hold in a particular way to be able to flip off the strap at the top and unholster the gun. Grab it from any other angle, and it's pretty much impossible to tug it out of the holster.
It's the same basic style of holster that police use to prevent their guns and backup guns from being stolen.
Most modern OWB (Outside the Waistband) holsters have some kind of mechanism like this (or some other kind of retention mechanism, like a button that can only be depressed when held from a specific angle) that prevent firearm theft.
Correct... these holsters were first introduced for law enforcement and military use, but the idea caught on and that design is now available in the civilian markets as well. I see them at gun shows all the time. Now to be sure, people do choose to open-carry, but I prefer concealed carry in keeping with my "gray man" philosophy. Be invisible, don't call attention to yourself in manner of dress, don't wear clothing with NRA or gun brand logos, avoid crowds, and blend into the background. But also be one of the most dangerous people in any situation. https://www.thebugoutbagguide.com/gray-man-theory/
Agree with this 100%. Visible weapons show your limits and also time differentials in a situation. With her back holster and gender, I am guessing 2-3 seconds holster to fire. Side arm on hip especially with the shape of a womans hip would be a much faster draw for her
It is a nice gun though
Open carry says “shoot me first”.
Yes, the Makarov is a superb weapon, especially in 9mm Makarov. They introduced some in .380 (or 9mm Kurz) but I think that round is not worthy for self defense. The Makarov was a Soviet copy of the German Walther PPK, it breaks down and reassembles the same way, but the finish is less elegant than a Walther. But it reliably goes BANG, and I'll take that over cosmetics any day.
The Makaov became standard issue in Warsaw Pact nations under Soviet influence and can be found still in use in those countries. It's a nice double-action auto that can be easily controlled by almost any shooter, male or female.
If you decide to get one, go for the ones chambered for the 9mm-Makarov ammo; it has a higher muzzle velocity and stopping power... IMHO of course.
Don't know about a retention holster, but that is where I carry (concealed), and I can get first shot on target in 1.5 or less. Honestly not sure how gender (either of the two : ) ) enters into it.
Thats all good and true about the holsters but I just want to add that all it takes is one dude with a gun to put his to the back of her head, then he easily has a second gun. I would never open carry for this reason. Also, have gotten crazy stares from random citizens for open carrying in the past, it just draws too much attention .
Nutters don't need to grab other people's guns. They get their supply free from the FBI.
No it does not.
Criminals can't resist the possibility of a free gun. I have seen many videos in which a bad guy grabs at a gun just because they can. Someone mentioned the retention holster, but it would at the very least turn into a wrestling match. Hard to use it for protection in that situation. I heard a specialist say that anyone carrying open is just a remote holster for him should he decide he needs your gun.
Ah yes, the "specialist". I don't really give much people any credit. If what they said was true, then why does literally every single officer of the law (Police, FBI, CIA, SWAT, Marshall Service, Rangers, State Troopers/Equivalent, etc. etc.) as well as the military carry openly?
Because 99% of the time it doesn't happen that way. I'm not saying it NEVER happens, because it does. But for most people it'll never go down like that. And even if it does, most people who carry will typically have SOME form of backup on them. Whether it's another, smaller gun hidden away on their person, or a knife, or even just one of those really heavy flashlights, there's usually a backup.
So if nothing else, during the "struggle" the person with the gun still has the advantage since they have multiple options, such as stabbing them or beating them to near death.
Besides, if nothing else, the "struggle" will end pretty fast once they realize they can't get the gun easily because of the retention holster. Either because they flee, or someone nearby attacks them to help the gun owner.
The person she’s with would let her know someone’s approaching close. Wouldn’t be a surprise grab and run.
Ya, cause I've never seen videos of people grabbing cops guns. Cops deal with that all of the time in training. Odds are she has not. I have not. I think about it, and I plan for it, but I am not trained for it. I assure you that a determined criminal can get that gun. And a "specialst" is also trained. Intensely on just such a skill. I don't know if you have ever gone toe to toe with a Seal or a Ranger, but if you do, my money is on the "specialist".
RET MIL...That is EXACTLY why I do NOT broadcast...9mm H&K w/close side body holster hidden with loose pullover...
