I heard that the Ukranians are welding the tanks' hatches shut to prevent desertion. They know that the crews know that the mission is a suicide mission and will try to run away from this unwinnable war.
Just a theory, but I got the feeling that part of the inadequate "training" the cannon fodder received is to show what happens if they have second thoughts of the whole arrangement.
They are also probably still too shell shocked about the situation to figure out that turning against the slaughterhouse commanders is an option.
One such tank managed to surrender to the Russians without getting destroyed. The Russians could see it was behaving oddly, suggestive of surrender. (I think it may have been approaching Russian lines with the cannon raised and the turret turned aft.) Indeed, the crew were spot-welded inside the tank.
Get out of the tank!!!!!

Why dont they just turn around and shoot their commanders?
