My grandfather (born 1886) and my grandmother (born 1893), they were 21 and 14 respectively when they were married in 1907. My Cherokee grandfather was 24 and my German grandmother was 16 when they were married. They were wed overseas and moved to the rez when they came back to the states. Regardless of "back in the day" mores, the fact remains no 14 year old is intellectually or emotionally the peer of a 24 year old. There is a deliberate imbalance of "power" there, and I'd wager some sort of psychological maladjustment in both parties.
One's mate should be one's equal. Period.
I get it. It happens. It often works, and can often work well. I have relatives who met when he was 28, she 16. Married at 30/18. Together now in their 60s and 70s. By all accounts a successful marriage, pretty loving folks. But the power dynamic imbalance is apparent, and honestly, in a perfect world they'd be more self-actualized if they had married equals.

If you go back a hundred or two hundred years a 14 girl marrying a grown man is fairly common. This echoed well into the 50s and 60s. Different standards than today and different roles and relationships. Not to mention today we baby everyone until they're in their mid twenties so everyone under 20 seems like a kid. I think her parents were looking at the money, and sacrificed her to him. There's no way I would let my daughter do that, no way. However, I do have to think that today's standards are not the same as in the past. We can filter things through the lens of today, but it isn't the same. My Mom was a "spinster" because she wasn't married before she was 25. My Grandmother was worried when she was 21 and unmarried (she married soon after that). I would say he was attracted to her, which I have always thought was creepy. However, her parents encouraged it, and even put her on the table to be sacrificed. How many shows/threads have we seen that catch these predators and they are arrested...too many to count.
