I have many suspicions, and trying hard to absorb all this. Much talk about standard temp for typical wildfires and HOW aluminum alloy rims on cars could possibly melt. IDK. But with 60-70 mile an hour winds I can see how the area was a virtual kiln raising temps to such a level. I do not disagree with DEW theories, but that was some damn strong wind. Perfect storm to wipe the place out. More facts coming each day. The Obama water guy, electric guys, cops IF they really blocked all exits on Front Street... they need to meet their maker soon.
But the asphalt roads didn't melt?
Fun fact:
The roads there get hot enough to melt your flip flops in the August heat. I have personal experience with that.
Also, most roads in Hawaii use crushed lava stones. As they age, the roads turn pink. They fill the potholes with more crushed lava stones and it looks like a pink leopard with black spots.
The roads here melt like any other asphalt road. They are not make of crushed lava stones. That is kapu.
I lived on the Big Island. Except for QL Hwy, Ali'i Drive in Kailua town, and subdivision roads in Kamuela, Hilo, and Kona... all roads were crushed lava. That was still true last time a visited a few years back.
Aluminum needs temps around 3000 degrees.

Sorry, pede. Pure aluminum melts at 1220.58 F. The MP of common alloys can vary but don’t exceed ~1250 F.

I have personally melted aluminum for casting over a blown charcoal fire.

Right, your article says PURE ALUMINUM, not aluminum with the oxide coating it naturally gets.
So, you think that a few ten thou of AlO2 is going to insulate the body of the chunk of Al from the 1400 F that a wood /charcoal fire generates? Also, IIRC, I quoted a figure for common alloys, many of which are eutectic. That’s one of then there SCIENCE words meaning the alloy exhibits a lower melting point than any of the constituent metals.
I guess you missed the part where I wrote that I have personally melted scrap Al alloy, to include chunks of wheels, over a wood and charcoal fire for casting. The fire was blown using a common lawn blower (sort of like a strong wind).
BTW, have you ever seen Al burn? I watched a 7200V Al power line knocked down in an ice storm bounce around until it hit a good ground in a puddle of salty water. It burned like a fuse right up to the pole transformer, which, BTW, exploded spectacularly.
Googling says 1218 degrees, higher if alloyed with other metals as rims normally are alloys.
You need to get through the oxide coating first tho, that requires some serious heat

When you weld aluminum you need to be meticulous in cleaning off the oxide coating ... why do you think TIG welders need to reach such incredibly high temperatures?
Good to know. I had commented only because I had read an earlier comment that aluminum will melt at lower temps, so I tried to double check to figure out which commenter knows the truth. In this case, the truth is bit more complex.
