Apple forced to update software after France’s iPhone 12 ban over radiation risks
The French government welcomed Apple’s software update, saying it would be swiftly tested and should allow for sales of the relatively old iPhone 12 model, launched in 2020, to resume.
Software (namely firmware) can manage hardware.
While i'm not sure of the specifics of how this can limit radiation, it could be possible that the signal search used too much power, or was too frequent, causing elevated radiation exposure that went beyond what was safe, and firmware could limit it.
Say, for instance, it looks for a signal 10,000 times a second at high power because the manufacturer thought it would limit drops. The software could lower it to 1000 or so, with less power.
Those signals could be electromagnetic radiation, which in large dosages can be harmful to humans
I don't know im just speculating.
Basedise frequency, software can also manipulate the transmission power. Essentially lowering the volume of the radio signal.
Doing so would also reduce connection quality, i.e. "bars", yes? (Assuming that the user doesn't move geographically closer to the tower.)
The update can also simply turn off the new "Death Ray" feature until the model attains significant enough adoption to doom mankind ...
The radiation is from the radio chip and the antenna. The radio chip has a power setting. The power setting is software configurable. So if France detects the radio and antenna are emitting too much radiation, then they can lower the power setting and it should lower the radiation from the device. If the device is putting out energy in a range that is unexpected, reducing the broadcast power should also allow for better performance of frequency filtering for those undesirable ranges of the light spectrum. However, device performance may be impacted as the device range will decrease if it broadcasts a weaker signal.
Keep in mind all of the light spectrum is radiated energy. I read the article and found it typical of leaving out the important information about what radiation frequency was actually being measured. There is a big difference in X-ray (or higher frequency) radiation vs 2.4ghz or 5ghz or 4g radiation. Higher wattage amplitudes in the latter can in some cases be dangerous versus nearly any prolonged exposure in the x-ray or higher frequency range is always dangerous.
Thank you!!! This is exactly what I was looking for
I just always assumed radiation risk came from hardware, not software…
But it being software related confirms my worst suspicions about cellphones, I suppose. And makes the first Kingsman movie lean more toward potentially predictive programming…
You were correct in your assumption.
In the same way the governor on the car limits the engine [hardwares] top speed, the software can limit the phones signal strength.
software turns down maximum transmit power like turning down the volume on your tv.
When people get into a flap about "radiation" (I know, EM not nuclear) and never mention intensity levels, it has the same effect on me as when people get obsessed over something being "too fast," but never talk about speeds or speed limits. Much ado about potentially nothing.
Apple is claiming they submitted everything to testing and it was all within range. France is claiming it’s above safe levels.
Everything has radiation but I wouldn’t be surprised if our devices are not as safe as producers claim.
I'm an engineer. Limits and levels don't have meaning without measurement. And if no one is discussing the measured data, it is a meaningless discussion.
Buy some Shungite, this absorbs EM radiation very well and purifies water just as well by absorbing heavy elements. This is a strange mineral, its precambrian and is a fullerene. Elite Shungite is the best.
