Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
โQuestion of the Dayโ: What is one of the best Christmas gifts you have received?
My Answer:
I remember being a kid and getting a snowboard and season pass to a place. It was a lot of fun. I was so happy and thankful:)

๐โ๏ธMerry Christmas everyone. Welcome back to daily chat. I look forward to moving forward together in Christ and growing in the year to come. I will be attempting to do a daily question to help get dialogue going. Love you all. Jesus Christ is KING๐๐๐ธ
My dad ran the family finances, and was super stingy in general due to anxiety on his part more than lack of money. In his later life he seems to have overcome this, which is good for him.
Christmas was always kind of... A weird, anxious disappointment. Not that it was bad, or Dickensian. Extended family always came through pretty nicely and we had good get togethers hosted by other people. But actual Christmas at our house was always... Weird.
Don't have a great memory of gifts, they were always pretty bad, like a couple of clothes and a bag of candy or something. One year after I moved out he got my mom a weight loss book and a vacuum cleaner (my mom wasn't particularly overweight ๐ ).
Best gift: my dad got himself an IBM PC clone, 386. That was pretty common. A big, expensive gift for him, not much for us. And the PC was the only thing the rest of us could use, if that makes sense. Most of the gifts would be like a set of golf clubs for himself (fake examples). I pretty much hijacked it and here we are.
One year my aunt got me Ice Cube's The Predator on cassette. That's probably the best gift.
Lmao. Hadn't thought about this stuff in years. I really can't complain. I went the opposite way and am overly generous in my gift giving, which is the best outcome I think.
Im new here, just found out about this site yesterday through my stepson...Merry Christmas everyone! In response to that question: I actually have 2 favorites. The first one was from my mom. She loved Christmas, and even though she was living on disability, and was as poor as a church mouse, ( apparently church mice are really poor ) she always bought something for everyone in the family....6 kids, their wives and children. It was never anything big, but there was always SOMETHING. One year, mine was a can of shaving cream. Barbasol, in case you were wondering. Honestly, at first I was kinda ticked off, but that only lasted a few minutes before I realized how special it was, and its been a treasured memory ever since. The other was from my brother David. One year he and his wife and daughter drove 8 hours to spend Christmas with me, and he got me a spinnerbait. One spinnerbait. From Walmart. Maybe $1.25 But this time, I had already learned this lesson, so I filed the memory in its proper place, and I pull it out and ponder on it now and then when Im counting my blessings. Merry Christmas everyone!
How sweet! Your Mom was a special woman who taught you well!
Welcome and Merry Christmas. Nice story. Thanks for sharing it.
Welcome my fren. My name is Ryan. Feel free to reach out if you ever need prayer or a fren to vent to.
What a beautiful share my fren. It warmed my heart to hear. Thanks for sharing fren. Merry Christmas God bless. Much love
Had a "poor as a church mouse" Grandma growing up. She lived across the country in a very ramshackle old farmhouse. Each Christmas she managed to send my sisters and I each a gift, always the same. It was a windbreaker, in last year's size each time! Being the youngest, I just had to wait a year or two then I'd fit in the one she sent for my next oldest sister that was too small! Love that memory.
During a turn in our finances, my wife gave me a note on a napkin reminding me of all the reasons she loved me & was grateful God brought us together.
I have it framed & see it every day.
This is based and on Q. I keep a note like that from a hotel memo pad. that is the best gift :)
I don't remember the gifts so much, except for God's own Son. That gift lives on still for me.
I remember many a fun card game with loved ones and laughter. Even playing solitaire nowadays brings the smile from my heart of those memories.
A Bible the Christmas after graduation from HS. Read the whole thing over the next two years. It impacted the course of my life.
