I can personally tell you this is a real thing, although not all the ashes are to be buried on the moon. Some are to be released into space in small capsules prior to the moon encounter.

NASA is quite stupid, so I go with the Navajo on this one, but I doubt the mission will actually pollute the moon. It's pretty big..
My understanding is the remains are going to be flown to a sound stage in Britain.
