Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.

In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
The Rolling Stones - Sympathy For the Devil - live Ya-Ya's
Reason for posting: On the surface it's easy to say they were Satanists or whatever but you have to think about what they were saying. I mean it's art and metaphor and such. I came across these quotes:
"My whole thing of this song was not black magic and all this nonsense - like Megadeth or whatever else came afterward. It was different than that."
-- Jagger
"Vaguely, (the line about the Kennedys) means you can't pin their deaths on anyone, because there were so many people who would have liked to see them dead. It is our responsibility because crime in our society is our responsibility."
-- Jagger
"Sympathy is quite an uplifting song. It's just a matter of looking (the Devil) in the face. He's there all the time. I've had very close contact with Lucifer - I've met him several times. Evil - people tend to bury it and hope it sorts itself out and doesn't rear its ugly head. Sympathy for the Devil is just as appropriate now, with 9/11. There it is again, big time. When that song was written, it was a time of turmoil. It was the first sort of international chaos since World War II. And confusion is not the ally of peace and love. You want to think the world is perfect. Everybody gets sucked into that. And as America has found out to its dismay, you can't hide. You might as well accept the fact that evil is there and deal with it any way you can. Sympathy for the Devil is a song that says, Don't forget him. If you confront him, then he's out of a job."

Never thought it meant he was praising the devil, just thought he was pointing out how complicit we can be lured into doing evil.
OkGo actually did an interesting "sequel" to the song, where the song is spoken from the perspective of the devil basically saying "Yeah, I'm an evil dude, but all this war and destruction is just people doing it to each other, I'm just here to watch"

i had suspected this, never looked at actual jagger quotes, ty.
i've been thinking lately about wh/bh influences in entertainment, sometimes you see wh stuff from obvious bh's like 'the stand'/stephen king, like there's a war within the author's heart. billy corgan is based but he's throwing bh refs into such a beautiful and comforting song- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYSbztCCTlA
This is a great song! I never thought it was satanic more a reflection of a wild life and the vices that possess you. I’m not a huge stones fan but I like a few songs. I prefer old 70s music that has a blues vibe. But heck I love most music. I was listening to Hank Williams Sr today.
OkGo's tribute to the song points this out! Talks about how the devil isn't doing anything at this point, and it's just humanity doing it to each other.

Interesting
Stones ~68-72 was the peak. And, lots of blues influence - cf their cover of "Love In Vain" for instance. Country ("Country Honk"), Gospel ("Shine A Light")...they really covered a lot of ground. I used to hate them but a coworker convinced me to check out this period more seriously and once I did I was like ahhhh.
Seen the stones 72 thru present day...always a special event
I’ll have to listen to the old stuff. I never hated the stones just wasn’t my favorite. When I listen to music I listen to the entire album. Especially now with vinyl and streaming. I’ve never liked radio. Sometimes I do deep dives into artists I like but don’t know all their music. I’ve always been a music junkie.
Grateful dead does alot is stones covers..dylan too
