The wealthiest of wealthy men, of that age, in the States, willingly signed their names on paper, quill and ink on parchment, Come and Get Us, against the most dread of foes, the world's only super-power at the time. They may as well have included their SSN's and zip-codes, so the British could find their homes and seize their bank accounts even faster.
Bonus for non-signer (he was busy fighting at the time) Continental General George Washington, formerly HM Colonel George Washington - He gets treason and desertion.
When I was a kid, my parents took me to visit Independence Hall in Philly. I remember what the tour guide told us about the signing of the Declaration. The story goes that John Hancock signed his name extra big & bold so that "King George could read it without his spectacles."
Actual signatures. Ink and quill. Pen on paper. vs the world's only super-power of the time. Our founding fathers could not have been more bad-ass than this!
