I don't think that was the sniper that got him. It appeared to me that he was looking OVER his scope whe the first shot was heard and FLINCHED. If anything, it was the sniper laying prone.
Ok but why did they wait until the guy fired?

I dunno, it looks like he detects something the moment before and looks up to confirm, but was a fraction of a second to late.

I get sound and sight can confuse things, but it's weird to look up from your scope like that imo.
