My guess: WH let him get almost picked off in prison and then snuck him out. When does a bird sing? May not be alive due to his crimes but maybe he was pissed off enough to leave a wonderful complete confession with names, dates, receipts and photos.
If he was rescued alive, he would still be alive to testify. Why kill your best witness?

It's kinda like the Santa Claus story. Everyone knows the truth, that you'd be super disappointed if you believed on Dec. 24/25 he was supposed to do what the legend says. Every year, no presents, your chimney undisturbed, not a sooty footprint in sight! Yet we still enjoy telling kids this little white lie and letting them have some fun with the fantasy, because harmless tradition.
Similarly, you'd be super disappointed if you believed each datefag that came along. Yet we still enjoy having fun with some little white datefagging.
