The article states there were 19 pages of legal notes taken in the raid and the contention was that these papers contained attorney client information. The judge ordered copies of the documents destroyed (not the documents themselves) pending his review of the original documents. Sounds like a wise decision as breaching the attorney client privilege could cause the case to be dismissed. Any person held in jail pending trial has a right to work with his attorney in preparation of his defense.

How does anyone in jail have anything other than the clothes they wear? They make you give up everything other than that when you are checked in before being put in a cell.

No way. What else would get someone to do such an obviously stupid, unethical and illegal acts. Those papers are protected by the 4th amendment. They can be seized from a cell but not destroyed by even a judges order. Destruction.of property, obstruction of legal defense, denial of due process. Those papers have to be available for use even if it's done under supervision.
That's what I said too. You can raid the cell or the house or wherever but nothing can be destroyed as evidences. "Get rid of them" means destroy to me.
