I notice this list doesnt include its primary opponent
Yeah but the US wanted unconditional surrender
The conditions they got were the same the Japanese proposed in Switzerland in any case.
If a statesman had been President in 1944, 30,000 American lives would not have been lost.
In a way, this is much like the quiet man who just wants to be left alone. Japan was a MENACE for years before we got involved. Once Pearl Harbor roused us, we weren’t going to accept anything other than Japan NEVER being able to wage an offensive war at least in their lifetimes.
There was never going to be a statesman back channel surrender. Japan had lost the ability to strike the US mainland by then, and no one was in a peaceful mood.
Commies in the US state dept. Pretty much forced the Japanese to attack us. Stalin was in a panic,he needed the troops he had facing the japs, moved to the west to fight Hitler.
That's the reason we're told, but not the real reason. Truman was determined to see the Manhattan Project succeed after seeing just how much money had been pumped into the program.
Not surprised
Hideki Tojo was the main impediment to peace. As prime minister he would try suicide rather than admit defeat. After cessation of hostilities he was imprisoned until his demise in 1948.
Tojo boasted that his only hobby was his work, and he customarily brought home his paperwork to work late into the night and refused to have any part in raising his children, which he viewed both as a distraction from his work and a woman's work. He had his wife do all the work of taking care of his children. A stern, humorless man, he was known for his brusque manner, his obsession with etiquette, and his coldness. Like almost all Japanese officers at the time, he routinely slapped the faces of the men under his command when giving orders. He said that face-slapping was a "means of training" men who came from families that were not part of the samurai caste and for whom bushido was not second nature.
Russia was amassing troops to attack Japan from the north. The US government ignored Japans unconditional surrender as they wanted to nuke Japan as a show of force to Russia. True story.
Dang. Ain’t wars nasty. Like people get killed an stuff, and then years later the armchair generals question everything.
Let’s state true facts. The Japanese were viscous and barbaric. They butchered the Chinese and used them as medical Guinea pigs. They were the aggressors in WWII having begun in the 1930s.
The only way to kill a snake is to cut off its head-complete unconditional surrender.
Stop being apologist for winning the war that we did not start.
The propaganda has brainwashed you good. Tens of thousands of Americans died needlessly. We didn't even try to get their surrender earlier.
It was the military leaders (Dwight D. Eisenhower, William D. Leahy, Chester W. Nimitz, Douglas MacArthur, Hap Arnold)
These leaders were all saying I surrender from Japan could have been negotiated earlier.
So, it's actually those oppose the general's wisdom that are the armchair generals.
What happened happened, and nobody can change what happened almost 80 years ago. Some things were done right and some things were done wrong. Sometimes bad intel cost lives of friendlies, but we don’t know what they knew then, nor do we know how much accurate intel they had. The best thing would have been that Germany, Italy, and Japan stayed home, but they didn’t and as a result 60 million people died from WWII. But the American are the bad guys right?
Wait until you learn that the US actually knew about what was coming to Pearl Harbor and ignored the ramifications.
You sure extrapolated a lot I didnt say from my post then used your assumptions of my rhetoric to attack me? Wild man.
Sorry, didn’t mean to!
It had to be unconditional. Nothing less was acceptable after they were baited into attacking Pearl
The President easily could have got an unconditional surrender long in advance. They just wanted to try their new atomic toys, which wiped out nearly the entire Christian population of Japan, probably one of the objectives.
They also wanted to show the devastation to Stalin!
Yes, and Truman ignore them all just so he could see how powerful the Manhattan Project's results would be.
