Not a silly question. I personally prefer the NIV ("New International Version") for simplicity and clarity and ease of understanding and have read it twice, cover to cover. I have a Study version that has all kinds of notes, but the one I read all the time only has a few footnotes - much less intimidating and much lighter and easier to handle. But the other is nice for reference. I grew up with the King James Version, which is more poetic but not as accessible. I also have the 1699 version but haven't read that much at all. I would imagine the earlier versions are less "tampered with" but whatever brings you closest to God is what you should read. An unscholarly answer, but there you go.
Not silly at all! I think you should read whatever you are most comfortable with. KJV has probably been messed with the least, but is the hardest to digest for me. I like NKJV, and have read it through. I also like NIV, and have read it through. Whatever version you read, set your heart and mind on the fact that God is absolutely powerful enough to preserve his word. If you have doubts about that like I did, I recommend a book or audio book by Chuck Missler called Learn the Bible in 24 hours. Satan has done some incredible work in placing doubt in our minds as to the accuracy of the Bible. To our detriment.
Also, don’t allow others that will come into this thread, to disuede you from doing what you want to do. It’s a great idea. You should read God’s word all the way through. It’s really a great read, and he will speak to you, and you will learn and become more close with him.
Not silly at all. Many versions of the bible have been significantly altered in key parts, whether intentionally deceptive or shallow interpretations. I love the KJV for many reasons, but one reason that is often overlooked is that the language generally aspires to be beautiful and poetic. I find the "red-letter" highlighted bibles to be distracting. It's quite subjective. I suggest going to a bookstore to get a feel for a few versions before picking.

KJV for me.
And Satan's agents will prosper none in trying to convince me otherwise.
