i.e. How can we identify wolves in sheeps’ clothing, and how do I know I’m not fooling myself?
The modern church is about as pragmatically clear on this as mud, imho. They don’t have an answer and try to dance around it and cover it up with emotion and flowers and hypergrace.
It’s why their only explanation of Trump punching back is “well, he’s not perfect, but I didn’t hire a minister” and the sane left non-church sees the church’s defense and acceptance of Trump as hypocrisy. “How can you, as a Christian, justify fighting back instead of turning the other cheek?” They use similar arguments about the Crusades, whether they as a whole or individual campaigns were truthfully justifiable or not. The mere thought of pushing back is an instant, permanent black eye.
Looking past their not noticing themselves as aggressors and their own unrighteousness, what does “turn the other cheek” actually mean contextually, for starters? Is it currently presented in the correct context? What would the implications of that be?
This is a bad look for Pence, but also why these seem like good questions, regardless of which way he’s actually oriented
