"Fixing a broken organization that had experienced close to $100 billion in losses and was projected to lose another $200 billion, without a bankruptcy proceeding, is a daunting task. Fixing a heavily legislated and overly regulated organization as massive, important, cherished, misunderstood and debated as the United States Postal Service, with such a broken business model, is even more difficult."
Don't forget that private Delivery companies have profited off the back of the USPS. Using the service in areas that were too cost prohibitive to do themselves. Thus, forcing the USPS to overburden its own system on money losing deliveries. Very sneaky. I think a reasonable estimate should be calculated and shares be given to the USPS. Let those Dividends fund a portion of the annual working capital needs.
My issue with the USPS is it is taking forever to arrive where it is sent. I sent a letter to my water company which is 25 miles away from me but it took 14 days to get there. That is INSANE.
A few suggestions:
Automate totally, reduce daily delivery to twice a week thereby reducing the mail carriers by half, charge the shit out of the mass mailed advertising and get rid of the census bureau, the postal carriers can do it on an ongoing basis.
To be fair, the price of stamps has fairly closely tracked the CPI changes, plus about 28%. The price is mainly set by the inflation of the dollar, which is now worth about 10 cents in my childhood. But back then, incomes were not devastated by all the taxation that is now present.

Yes you are correct SirBudLight I live very rural almost every UPS deliivery ends up @ the post office.
Yup. Add to that a culture that seems to have disdain for "efficiency" and you have a very "tough nut to crack".
The actual process of fixing it is not the issue. If not for the bureaucracy you could treat it like any other business and fix it easily.
The bigger issue is the regulatory oversight that is in place. a nightmare to get through.
CHARGE JUNKMAIL FULL PRICE
I am tired of subsidizing it.
maybe they'll update the repurposed "Johnny Cabs" (Total Recall) that they're using today....

About time. The only "business model" they've been following for years has been "Rhe price of stamps will double again this year."

Keep the carriers, clerks, mail handlers, building maintenance and fire all everyone above postmaster.
The best reform that shit-show known as the USPS would be to completely shut it down and go back to horse and buggy for faster service....
