I'd like to make that stipulation, but it's imposing a double standard.
We don't require Chinese citizens to have "free speech" or "religious freedom" before we trade with them.
We don't insist that Saudi Arabia allow "free speech" or "women's rights" before we trade with them.
We don't insist that Russia allows LGBTQ rights or "racial equality" before we trade with them.
So... insisting that Europe allow "free speech" in order to trade, or to not impose trade tariffs is a bit one-sided. We don't require other regions to pass that same test... so why just single out Europe?
I would think Europe having free speech would more than likely keep them as an ally. If we give up on Europe (people with free speech, can change the nations thinking-look right here and see), they may become like the Chinese-and become our rivals. One more nation(s) to be concerned about. Maybe they are not much of an ally now, but once we put the distance between them and us with treating them like China, Saudi Arabia, or even Russia we may have to search forever for an ally in that region. Just my opinion on the matter. I don't know what Trump, or his administration, have in mind.
I think Trump will want to require them to lift the ban on our beef and some other things that they ban. I can understand their issue not wanting to bring in items they have already banned due to health concerns (several of our processed food items with certain dyes and fake sweeteners, etc). Their beef ban is because we had a few instances (Idk exact numbers) of mad cow and they have had none, so they want to take no chances.

Agreed! I was thinking though, just insisting in fair elections would be enough. The people will eventually vote in free speech

Great points.
