That could explain it, but something else is going on. Note that Meloni invited Trump to Rome several times, during her recent visit. Obviously, the Pope is going to die soon, even as he trampled all Catholics with his permissive inclusion policies.
Nevertheless, he is still the head of the Church (not sure how I feel about that, because I believe only Jesus is that, and he lives for anyone who chooses to accept him, so), but the man is still owed due deference and respect in a formal situation, on his death-bed. When he does die, all the knives will be out in the Vatican.
Vatican II did a giant flipflop on what traditional Catholicism taught. They wanted to temper what was an absolute closed door to anyone outside of the Catholic Church. But this was outright heresy to centuries of papal and council documents. It proved to be a disingenuous argument in order to promote ecumenical and interfaith dialogue for reasons that appear to be conspiratorial towards uniting all world religions under the papacy.

Hey, he's just living out Vatican 2! You know, the official policy of the One True Church™ that you have to belong to or else you go to hell (:
Sound like Islam…. Hmmmm
Never heard the go to hell part on a church. But I have heard the accept Jesus to go to heaven.
