True! Sperm whales were hunted almost to extinction for their oil, which was used mainly to light homes with.
That doesn't mean Rockefeller was a decent human being; only that capitalism tends to creates benefits for all as a side-effect of people working their asses off to create income and wealth for themselves.
Nor was Ford. He sold trucks to the Germans in WWII

Not really. Whale oil was used mostly for lighting, lubrication and making soap. You are thinking about coal oil and it's been around for over 3,000 years. Originally discovered in China. It started being commercially mined here in America in 1749. Kerosene is a whole nuther ball game. It's more like diesel fuel and in many cases can be used instead of diesel. Very poor for illumination, good for heating.
