They gave her Tylenol, ran a battery of tests and scans, and nine hours later sent us home with a diagnosis of "dehydration with non-covid cold." They asked for insurance info and I told them I would pay cash. The said they would send a bill but highly encouraged Medicaid. I thanked them, we left, and a few weeks later we got a bill for $28K that they, the hospital, had reduced and discounted down to a very manageable $1100. If we had had insurance they would have billed the full $28K to the insurance company and we would have still been responsible for 20% of it, $5600.

I canceled mine as well... there's a Dr here who charges 35$ month for visits and meds. (Does not take insurance!) Like a membership plan. I do that instead.

This is the way. This is what insurance cos and government definitely dont want us to have. The medical/ins is such a scam and racket. Wait 3 months just to see a doctor for them to sign you up for a test you have to take another 3 months later. What a complete scam and waste...
I’m considering this myself. I barely go to the dr. and even if I do, I pay full price for it because I never get close to reaching my deductible. I would be better off putting my premium in a savings account and using it instead of my useless, expensive “health” insurance.

That's because they've invaded our "Healthcare" system every bit as much has they have IT. 50% of the "doctors" around me are friggin' Indians. And, yes, the couple that I've been to are as much of a clueless-rule-following drone as you might expect. Deport!
It is not illegal to not have health insurance. Whoever told you that is misinformed. No one will arrest you if you go to the doctor and pay them directly without using insurance.

My doctor says the insurance company picks up the 80% of the negotiated cash price.
With insurance you should be paying 220 dollars, not 5600.
