Meta (Facebook) is destroying 2500 acres of farmland in Louisiana to build a Mega Data Center. The AI Takeover is here.
Someone explain to me why all this monster AI data Center construction all over America. So ChatGPT can process AI requests?
On a quiet patch of former farmland in northeastern Louisiana, a fleet of excavators has leveled more than 2,000 acres of reddish clay earth. This is rural Richland Parish, once a floodplain tangled with meandering bayous and wild canebrake where black bears still wander and a quarter of the 20,000 residents live below the poverty line.
Enter Meta---the sixth-largest company in the world by market cap. The tech giant is keen on making Richland home to its wildest AI aspirations—courtesy of a tremendous amount of new gas-fired power. The region has ample land and sits adjacent to Louisiana’s huge Haynesville Shale gas field.
In December, construction began on Meta’s biggest-yet data center: a $10 billion complex of nine buildings, housing bank upon bank of servers that will take up over 4 million square feet, an area larger than Disneyland.

And its seemingly silence from the environmentalists.
the irony: mostly ai generated

People used to whine that crypto miners were using all the electricity. Maybe the issue is who is getting subsidized electricity and not paying for what they use?
these data centers are friggin huge and have an enormous demand on power and water and have an energy demand 5-6x greater than that of a traditionally standard colocation or enterprise level data center
Do we need what they are pushing?
“However, this week, any chance of that Chinese dream was set back a long way - when Fractal moved the contents of several data center server clusters, to a single Apple Mac Studio - about the size of a small shoe box - proving intelligence at the edge, without a data center is now possible.” https://fractalcomputing.substack.com/p/apple-studio-and-fractal-crush-chinese
Yes this more power or storage in less space is real and is in hyper drive, however, what they are doing is building the " new data center " and outfitting it with the newest, fastest, largest. These centers go up quick. Then they bounce back to the old one and retro fit it. We don't need what they are pushing at all. What they are pushing is called POPULATION REDUCTION. Its masked as the new shiny thing here to help.
Something that has not been discussed: California and AI. Everyone just assumes that AI will be in California. But they already have power problems and rolling blackouts. And I don’t see them improving it anytime soon. Possible counter point: big tech goes all in to put republicans in power. Very iffy.
I work in this kind of construction and almost all the data centers already started or that are about to start construction are nowhere near California. There’s like 15 just in texas
Outstanding. Thanks for that info.
The locals are happy about the jobs. There will be a power plant built just for the ai facility next door. I don’t know about any adverse environmental impact it might cause and I think the power will be natural gas. This is what I’ve heard so far.
But they'll have the pictures of all my dogs & cats, plus my Emails to Putin. 🤔🤨😂🤣
I work at a data center.
What I can and will say, is that most of the usage of these data centers is AI and research.
The world is becoming more connected, and more full of gigantic amounts of information. Add to that, LLMs require increasingly larger amounts of data in order to function. The company I work 3PL for is expanding exponentially and I honestly don't know how they build so much so fast, and where the material comes from.
Computers don't need food. They don't need us neither.
