That would allow US to control the Bering Strait AND both Straits of Greenland, plus put monitoring hardware on the Northern coast of Greenland & deploy patrols into the region.

I don't believe it's for defence from Russia, I believe it's more for defence from NATO (Europe).
Same here. It was the U.S. government that invaded Ukraine, not Russia. Russia seems to be minding its own business, including its own defense.
