I've been watching some travel vlogs and other videos on Somalia / Somalialand. I'm starting to think that the reason it is a "shit hole country" is because of the intel agencies (shocker).

The people there seem very sweet and nice barring the obvious crabs in a bucket mentality which naturally arises in impoverished war-torn regions.
I don't think I'll be able to look at this whole issue the same now. Need to look deeper later. But it seems the template has been:
- intel agencies destabilize a fledgling region
- NGOs and 'aid agencies' then shuffle their refugees around to destabilize the more established nations

Somalia was a shit hole long before any Intel agencies started operating there. And if any one country is to blame, it would be Britain. They've had a hand in both areas long before the U.S. even stepped foot in Africa.
I was a flight engineer on the P3 Orion in the US Navy for over 20 years. I have been to over 130 countries. Somalia was one of them. I was there for two weeks flying missions out of there and we stayed in a safe house protected 24 hours a day by Marines. The poverty in Mogadishu was staggering. Somalia was by far the worst place I have ever been. That includes many other third world countries. Somalia absolutely SUCKS and I was very happy to leave when the time came to go back to the Philippines to finish a six deployment. We flew missions in the South China Sea and other seas in that area.

The CIA has been involved in Somalia since the 1960s, with significant activities during the Somali Civil War (1991–present). In the 1967 elections, the CIA reportedly financed Prime Minister Muhammad Haji Ibrahim Egal and other pro-Western figures in the Somali Youth League to influence the outcome. During the 2000s, as the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) rose to power, the CIA launched a covert operation starting in 2003 to arm and fund Somali warlords opposed to the ICU. These warlords united under the Alliance for the Restoration of Peace and Counter-Terrorism, receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars from CIA agents operating out of Nairobi. This effort aimed to counter Islamist influence without deploying U.S. troops after the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu.
When the ICU defeated the CIA-backed warlords and took control of Mogadishu in 2006, the U.S. supported an Ethiopian invasion to oust them. The CIA, along with U.S. Special Forces and Marine units, directly participated in combat, providing intelligence, directing Ethiopian troops, and conducting airstrikes using AC-130 gunships and helicopter support.
The CIA also conducted renditions, capturing suspected al-Qaeda operatives like Mohammed Ali Isse and Suleiman Abdallah, often using Somali warlords to kidnap and hand over targets. Some were rendered to ships or secret prisons in Ethiopia.
By the late 2000s, the CIA established a secret base at Mogadishu's Aden Adde International Airport, running a counterterrorism training program and operating drone strikes. The agency also supported a black site run by Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency, where detainees were interrogated—sometimes by U.S. personnel.
Critics, including UN officials, argued that the CIA’s alliance with warlords strengthened Islamist groups like al-Shabaab and worsened instability.
