Favorite part of the speech.

I had an interesting conversation last night, I'm hoping it might be interesting to the group.

My old doctor (she's retired now) was born and grew up in Cameroon before being sent to boarding school in the UK. She eventually became a doctor, then immigrated to the U.S., did her residency in the Twin Cities and has lived and worked as a doctor here ever since until she retired a few years ago.

We have stayed close friends and we try to chat on the phone every few months. She's an absolutely amazing woman.

She mentioned that before she retired, she had a lot of Somali patients at her clinic because they viewed her as "one of us", which she found to be laughable as she grew up in a completely different country, was raised Christian and had spent the last 40 years of her life in the States.

Because they trusted her, they were constantly suggesting to her to sign up for financial benefits/programs saying that she was "feeding kids". It was the exact same pitch you'd expect: "Who cares? You get free money, just say you're feeding children."

My doctor would always politely decline, then warn them that they were inevitably going to get caught. All the while, her Somali patients would show up in new luxury cars despite not having jobs.

Needless to say, my doctor/friend was a mix of gratified and sad last night. Gratified that justice had been served, but sad in that she felt she had failed them as a Christian woman. She tried to guide them onto the honorable path, and they refused.
