I think CA just passed some kind of online age verification law. Operating systems like Linux will be SOL if this becomes widespread. Right now someone can bypass using a VPN. Some European countries have also passed these laws and the sale of VPNs has gone through the roof. But if this goes on a national level, we're screwed. Of course, they always say they are doing it to protect kids. Just another coordinated attack against our freedoms, privacy, and to consolidate power into the hands of the bigger corporate players.
This Stefanik promotes 2A, voted on strengthening instant criminal background checks, and is making the right sounds about Iran currently, etc, so I guess she just needs more of a clue on this.
"There are hundreds of operating systems, including many Linux distributions, which cater to various user needs and preferences. The exact number is difficult to determine due to the dynamic nature of software development and the continuous creation of new distributions."
Laws like this obliterate smaller developers and new distributions that don't have big corporate backing. Linux just being one. They simply won't be able to be in compliance which essentially defeats the entire premise of why they developed their products to begin with that offer alternatives to the usual big players and giving users more privacy - not to mention, they simply do not have the financial resources to be in complience.
My point is that it is not going to happen in any meaningful way and that these faggot "law makers" have no idea what they are talking about.
What about Trisquel linux, for example, produced in Spain I think by a single developer? Their shitty law does not apply to this developer and I can roll myself a version and use it within the continental US and they can't do anything about it. Linux forks itself around this kind of fuckery at the a-priory level. When some sort of telemetry was installed in Audacity (audio software), the fork known as Tenacity had come out within a week.
It's meaningless drivel. Government is about as tech savvy as Cro-magnon man; they think there is only one search engine. I will never be in compliance.
This is true but you could bet your house on the fact that it would light a candle under the actual linux community's collective ass. There are already many Kernel's that exist specifically to avoid certain blobs for example.
"if it gets added to Linux, I will move to bsd etc" - that's the spirit but I will just find a linux without it.
This shit will never get near the "LinuxLibre style" fuck-you kernels.
Canonical is not linux nor is Red hat.
It's just some half assed politician running their mouth anyway.
In Canada there is a sudden effort to amalgamate all these different government divisions into one unit and tie all your banking information together with it. Meanwhile on the other side they want you to have online accounts now, have to install annoying apps on your phone to access your accounts, and age verification.
This is probably the second step. Third is "for convenience and security" they'll start merging all your banking, computer, and government stuff together.
It's clear their agenda. A few years ago they tried to turn the planet into an entire prison. Some pesky trucker convoys and people able to get information outside of their control quickly crushed their effort. But you know they'll try again, as they learned nothing from their first attempt. Next time they'll lock you out of your phones and computers, kill your bank accounts, and lock all government access. With one push of a keystroke, your entire life is de-personed and you won't even be able to object.
I remember when I empty the bank accounts of two Canadian truckers who helped us truckers drive the beltway.
This was a tactic used for inside assets and counter operations working against each other. We didn't hear about these things and when it happened to these people they would find someone on their side, like an attorney general or president, and give them a cash Visa card enough to get apartment and car and start over. They couldn't just reinstate the bank account.
So this has been a real tactic on the inside and I believe it's coming to us. Instead of getting kicked off Twitter talking about election fraud they will empty your bank account.
Get your popcorn. Nearly EVERY bill has some unintended consequences they either didn't care about or didn't know about. Even if they thought about the OSs in cell phones, I can almost guarantee they didn't even think about stuff like IOT, routers/switches/wifi, microwaves, TVs, their smart watches, and everything else that more than likely has Linux embedded inside. How about building security, HVAC, or fire suppression? Or the systems that run dams, power plants, elevators, subways, or airplanes? ATC? Traffic control systems, speed and red light cameras? Casinos? This could be fun...
Here is my new favorite Grok chat session. It mentioned many of the things I wrote above before asking Grok. I own (or have used) more than 10 of the items Grok mentioned - and no, I don't own a DeLaval robotic milking system unfortunately.
Neither Stefanik or Gottheimer "wrote" this bill. Someone handed it to them wrapped in a pallet of cash

If something was added to the kernel it would affect all distros that used that kernel, if it gets added to Linux, I will move to bsd etc

Indeed, thank you

Fun times ahead.

They want to tie nooses around every neck because your socialist credit score will determine your worth as one of the 2800 slaves for each.
I don't use a cellphone, so I don't use "apps." I have a desktop computer and use actual full programs.

I have all the operating systems I need. They can't do that to my computers.
