I think it’s just poor light placement. The shadow is created by the buildup of shadows from three light sources: one light from above front and two low lights shining a bit upwards from the left and right. The chin and jaw cast a downward shadow down the neck and the left and right lights create a slightly upward shadow from his collar upward on his neck. The darkest spot has three shadows overlapping.
I was thinking there’s gotta be a rational explanation for this but X has this posted which is a really bad explanation which makes me think it is a mask
Hollywood make up artists can make a mask look seemingly realistic. I believe that these cheaper versions are meant to be noticed.
