Ray was a member of the 28th Marines who stormed the beaches of a tiny spit of an island named Iwo Jima. Ray, with too many of his brothers never made it to the beach as he was cut down in the bloody surf. His brothers of the U.S. Marines from the 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Regiment of the 5th Division take the crest of Mount Suribachi and planted the US flag for the iconic picture we all know. Ray is why I fight so hard against the demons!
Lovely tribute. I would like to pay tribute to the 4 Brothers who came from my home base and died within six months of each other from Guadalcanal to Italy. Their story was the inspiration for Saving Private Ryan. Also to Scott, a classmate who died in Vietnam and to Bill who returned from two missions in Vietnam and died in 3 months from cancer caused by agent orange.
They gave everything. The most humbling places I have ever trekked is the battlefields of Gettysburg and Arlington cemetary. Thank you to the 100's of thousands who left us the gift of freedom and the will to fight this very different battle.

May he rest in peace.
