I just finished binge watching Band of Brother, The Pacific, and Masters of the Air. This generation was so amazing. It breaks my heart that they are all almost gone.
Is there video? I hate to be the one to say it, but it looks like it is somewhat staged, as if someone not in the photo is lifting him (he seems to be too far from the bar for it to be real). I'm 68 and up until a few weeks ago, when I quit a bi-weekly workout, I could do 10, but doubt that if I lived to 100, I would still be able to do more than 1.
I think they are protecting him if he falls, which any of us would do if we saw the same thing. His head is a little far from the bar because most people, me included, kick their legs out slightly forward while doing these, which moves your chin away from the bar. I say give the man the credit due, don't steal his thunder, not this day or any day.
Start with bent over dumbell rows, pullups from nothing is a big step, and demoralising to do if you can only manage one or half of one at a time with great effort. After a few months of dumbell rows, then you can do 2 or 3 pullups easy and you can progress from there.
It's wonderful for him to have to support and men there that do care about him.. I am happy for him.. 101.. He has earned all the attention and support.. Lots of love for him..

Ooo, if you haven't listened to the Band of Brothers podcast, I highly recommend checking it out💖

That must feel so good to be supported like that. He was probably automatic on the bar as a young man.
We need more of this stuff in the world.
Absolutely!

You can see in the photo that they're holding him up

I thought I could see that, but wasn't sure. Still an awesome American!
I looked but couldn't find a video...sorry!
If I can do that, assisted or unassisted, or even just propped up, at 101, I will accept a dessert.
WW2 vet Frank (The Tank) Stellar does still do pull ups. But yes this particular photo is staged. Probably holding him up for a photo-op.

Awesome! Thank you! Maybe I'll be able to do one gun barrel pull up when I'm 70 :)
Makes me feel like a pansy. Guess I better start hitting the pullup bar.

Damn what a man!
I know, right?!? I'm 57 and I can't do pullups. The old guy shames me!! LoL
