Truth is always a defense against defamation charges. "Hate Speech" is a made up "crime" to be selectively charged by a tyrannical government against the free speech rights of its citizens.
That's an American thing. Seriously: truth was not a defense against libel and slander under the British crown. There's a good history of how it became a thing in America because of the John Peter Zenger case, long before the Revolution.
JPZ was a newspaper publisher who printed criticism of the British appointed governor of New York. He was tried for libel and the crown prosecution openly disregarded the fact that JPZ's accusations of corruption were true, saying that the law applied anyway, which was true at the time. The New York jury disagreed and voted him not guilty in defiance of the judges instructions. He had been in prison about a year before his trial.
