No, Russia did not share hosting of the 2018 FIFA World Cup with another country; it was the sole host nation.

No, Qatar did not share hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup with another country. It was the sole host nation for that tournament, making it the first Arab nation and the smallest country ever to host the event.

Is anyone else upset that the USA is sharing hosting with Canada and Mexico? Much smaller countries have hosted it alone. Is this some slide towards a North American Union, or just commercial stinginess and laziness?

I searched for

why is the world cup not being held only in the usa? why are canada and mexico allowed to host matches?

and was given the reason:

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico because the tournament expanded to 48 teams, creating 104 matches that a single nation could not comfortably accommodate. The joint "United 2026" bid was awarded in 2018 because pooling resources allowed the three nations to leverage existing stadiums and infrastructure without massive new construction, while maximizing commercial revenue and broadcast reach across North America.

Key reasons for the three-host format:

> Logistical Capacity: The expanded format requires more venues and matches than any single North American country could host alone; the U.S. hosts 78 matches, while Canada and Mexico each host 13.

>Existing Infrastructure: All 16 host cities already possessed large, modern stadiums and transport networks, reducing costs and construction time compared to building new venues.

>Commercial Strategy: A tri-national bid maximized access to the lucrative North American market, particularly U.S. television rights, and aimed to attract up to 6.5 million visitors.

>Geographic Clustering: Matches are divided into Western, Central, and Eastern regional clusters to minimize travel distances for teams and fans during the group stage.

While the U.S. hosts the majority of games including the final, Mexico hosts the opening match to balance the distribution and leverage its rich soccer history, while Canada provides additional venues in the eastern cluster.
