I support that, but it should be coming from the parents, not enforced by the government. The government needs to stop intruding into every aspect of our lives. They should not have any authority in this domain.
Government has NO RIGHT to make illegal any such actions. That is not the purpose of a reasonable government. That is the purpose of an authoritarian government, abusing "good intentions" to grab power and push us further down that slippery slope.

The same entity that is "doing the right thing" by banning phones (with penalties for fines that go to shadowy purposes) or jail time (for juvie for the kids or jail for the parents?) is the same entity that is pushing phone use every second through dopamine addiction. It's the same entity on both sides.
Remember that understanding with your "social calculus" calculations. Controlled Opposition controls the world. Who really benefits from this "lawful restriction." Who really benefits in the long term?
Keeping kids paying attention in school provides what benefit? What are they learning in school (specific indoctrination)? What are they learning on their phones (free to learn what they want)?
I'm not saying that's the most important thing, or that we shouldn't be teaching children useful skills. I am saying there is more going on than you may appreciate at first blush.

Except for emergencies, recording crazy teachers, etc. I do agree they should not be used in class.
