My country (UK) does not have birthright citizenship so I don't understand how it works.
I can understand that a pregnant woman might see an advantage to her baby in being born in the USA instead of some other country, so she tries to sneak in solely for the birth. Rightly enough this is seen as a problem.
But let's suppose Trump eventually wins and the court ruling is overturned or worked around. So now a baby born in the USA is not a US citizen. How would this work for baby #1 after the new system? In other words what would a baby now need in order to claim US citizenship?
When I've visited the USA I have met many proud Americans who were also proud of their foreign heritage, such as maybe Irish, Polish, Italian. Does this mean without birthright there would be the possibility that their offspring would not have citizenship?
only children of citizens would automatically get birthright citizenship. There are also multiple paths that foreigners can take to achieve citizenship but they all require conforming, becoming a productive part of and swearing allegiance to the USA.
