I think we need to check this account out in more depth. It fooled me as well. I’m sure that I’ve posted this account before. I meant to ask Grok about when the photo was taken, it started spitting info out before I could finish my question. This is what it told me about the account and the post.
The X post by @DoWCTO shows a military officer saluting near the Washington Monument and a helicopter, overlaid with glowing text “TRUST THE PLAN” and the caption “Are you trusting the plan, patriot? 🇺🇸”.
It directly mimics QAnon-style messaging that urges believers to have faith in a hidden, benevolent strategy by insiders to defeat adversaries.
The account is a satirical parody presenting itself as the “Department of War CTO” with a fictional “Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering,” prompting playful, in-character replies from users.
When it told me the account was a “satirical parody” I then asked how did it have a grey checkmark on the account.
This is the response.
The grey checkmark on X is reserved for official government or multilateral organization accounts, not general Premium users (who get blue).<grok:render card_id=“46273e” card_type=“citation_card” type=“render_inline_citation”><argument name="citation_id">5</argument></grok:render>
Parody or fan accounts mimicking government entities can sometimes receive or request the grey check if they present themselves convincingly as representing a “government” office — in this case, the fictional “Department of War CTO” roleplay fits the eligibility criteria for visual identity signals. X uses these badges to provide context, even for satirical takes.<grok:render card_id=“232824” card_type=“citation_card” type=“render_inline_citation”><argument name="citation_id">6</argument></grok:render>
User search shows it as blue verified overall, but the grey appearance likely comes from the government-style label X applies to accounts in this category. Parody accounts often lean into this for immersion, and X doesn’t always block them unless they violate impersonation rules.
Actually, no, I’m not sure. And I have no way of verifying it. The AI on X is the “thing” that told me it was a parody account. That’s why I commented that we need to check on it further. Like I said, I’ve posted info from that same account.

Whoa. Didn’t know that was possible.
Are you sure about that? Wouldn’t their title there be a felony? (“Impersonating a Federal Officer”)

Gotcha. Validating things is absurdly difficult these days…
Yes, it is.
Why does this feel like cheating😄
Which part? Me asking Grok about the video? Or me asking Grok about a grey checkmark and how it could be a parody account?
This has been a long, great journey
