If we were defending from an invasion, it would make no tactical sense to concentrate such a massive force away from the borders and in such a small area. It just maximizes casualties with very little reward.

I think military higher ups had a decision to make. Which avenue would be less destructive for the country: certify an illegitimate election in line with a propagandize media narrative, or announce publicly that there was a coup and Trump is the legitimate president. For national security, you choose the path of least resistance. Trump had to show them that he is the path of least resistance. It was a show of possibility.
