I had thought about cob houses before but I just need to one day decide on which city I want to retire in. I'm only 42 so I should have plenty of years left in me. I lived near Atlanta for about 14 years, in Jacksonville FL about 10 years, a little town called Lake City FL for maybe about 15 years and Tampa FL about 2 years but I never liked living in the big cities.
I like the benefits of a big city as in stores to shop at and being able to buy whatever I need without driving out of town to get it. I like walking but walking around here is dangerous, people don't care if they hit someone with car it seems, always running red lights, etc but the parks and beaches are nice.

The thought has crossed my mind to just buy some land out in the county where it's cheap and put something simple on it. The problem is the cost of a home, even a motorhome, can get expensive. I can buy a lot out in the county for a few thousand and would have deal with water and septic but that's not a big deal.

My parents bought their house I think it was 1992 for $23k and it's currently worth over $100k but it's out in the county well outside of the city so prices are cheaper. It's not the value of homes going up though, it's our governments all over the world causing inflation so the value of our currencies has gone down throughout the decades but the value of a house has not gone up really.
A couple of years ago when I moved from north Florida to south Florida, I decided to rent until I'm decided on what city to stay in for decades. It is a big scam but landlords get rich off of people, some of which are struggling to get by. If a landlord owns and rents out 100 homes for an average rent of $800 then that landlord is getting $80,000 per month and likely spends less than $5,000 on maintenance etc.
It's all a big fucking criminal scam though. Walmart marks up the price of some things in their store as high as 2,000% above what they paid, sometimes even more. I understand they need to make profit to stay in business but they go way too far as does most, if not all, stores.
If you buy a TV for $500, you can bet on it that the store only paid $25 to $50 for it. Online shopping was supposed to reduce that cost by bypassing local stores and ordering directly from warehouses but of course they don't provide cheaper prices online.
If you can gain access to manufacturers, many of which are in China, you can buy things way cheaper than what you will see in a store. It would take a month or longer to get the product but it would be way cheaper. Retail likes to call it a convenience fee of sort for being able to go to a store and buy something immediately.

The demand for rentals is so high because the cost of purchasing a home, obtaining a mortgage is very expensive today. In many places, the cost or supposed home value has increased 4 or 5 times over the past 25 years but wages have not gone up to match those increases equally.
In the 90s you could easily rent places for $300, $350 or whatever but minimum wage at one point in the 90s was $4.25. I don't know offhand what minimum wage is right now but good luck ever finding places to rent for under $800. We can also get into those that are on disability, many of which only receiving $794 in most states.
Most landlords require tenants to earn 3 times in monthly income of what the monthly rent is. If you wanted to rent a place for $800 then in most instances you would need to earn at least $2,400 to barely be approved. If a person makes $15 per hour, after the typical amount of taxes taken from each paycheck, they would likely only take home between 1900 and 2000 for a month which would mean they could only get approved for maybe $650 for rent.
When you get into that price range, you're looking at tiny efficiencies barely big enough for 1 person to live very minimally. The part of all of this that is royally fucked up is that mortgages are extremely cheap because you can take out a 30 year mortgages on a house but not a mobile home.
Banks make it harder for people to be approved for a mortgage without great credit. Without the high credit score, a person will typically need to make a 20% down payment. An average house is going to cost over $200,000 so that's about $40,000 if 20% down payment is made.

There is never a gas shortage but what actually happens is the barrels of oil is held back to create a fake shortage which drives the prices up.
Once the fake shortage is gone, the higher gas prices typically remain because it's all a big worldwide fucking scam.
