Visited western Algarve and was shocked by the brilliant blue sky - something I had not seen for years. The nearest airport was Faro, 60 miles east. A couple things I noticed at the fire sites I’ve visited (aside from the dissolved and melted buildings and cars): 1 a dull but distinct smell that reminded me of darkroom chemicals, and 2 every metal surface was completely coated with rust.

Because the standard change in temperature is about 2 degrees per thousand feet....so at 30,000 ft.....the temperature would be -60 of what you feel, at that location on the ground. Look up Boyle’s law.....the less pressure lowers the temperature. What happens is any moisture freezes, and doesn’t evaporate quicker.

It would be a real feat to burn any fuel at altitude and NOT produce contrails.
